Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has granted clemency to
10 inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) as part of the state’s
Ramadan and Sallah celebrations.
The spokesperson for the NCoS in Jigawa, CSC Sani Jahun,
disclosed this in a statement issued in Dutse. He noted that the governor’s
decision followed the recommendation of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative
of Mercy during its first sitting in 2025.
“In the spirit of Ramadan fasting and the Sallah
festivities, Governor Namadi approved the release of 10 inmates across the
state, as recommended by the advisory council,” Jahun stated.
The State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr.
Abdulqadir Fanini, urged the pardoned individuals to uphold good conduct and
desist from unlawful activities as they reintegrate into society.
The Controller of Corrections in the state, CC Yusuf
Lakpene, who received the release order on behalf of the Controller-General of
NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, expressed gratitude to the governor for the gesture.
He also advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the reformative training
they received while in custody.
According to Jahun, six of the released inmates were from
the Medium Security Correctional Centre (MSCC) in Gumel, two from MSCC Hadejia,
and two from the Birnin Kudu Farm Centre. He further explained that five were
released on probation, one was granted clemency due to a chronic liver illness,
while four others were unconditionally discharged.
In addition to their release, the beneficiaries received
stipends for transportation and to support their Sallah celebrations.
