Revitalisation of McCarthy Stadium to Boost Sports Development in Benue – Commissioner

The Commissioner for Sports, Youth, and Creativity, Terkimbi Ikyange, has reaffirmed that Governor Hyacinth Alia’s strategic investment in sports infrastructure will restore Benue State’s prominence in sporting activities.

Speaking during an inspection of the ongoing McCarthy Stadium renovation in Makurdi, Ikyange revealed that the governor has significantly increased the 2025 budget for sports and youth development, underscoring his administration’s dedication to empowering young talents.

“The reconstruction of McCarthy Stadium is on track to be completed by May 29, 2025, and the contractor has assured timely delivery,” the Commissioner stated.

He emphasized that this marks the second major sports facility upgrade under Governor Alia’s leadership in just one year, reflecting his passion for grassroots talent development.

“For sports to thrive, there must be adequate facilities. Football, in particular, requires standard pitches. Scouts from within and outside Nigeria often struggle to discover talent because of poor playing conditions. Developing proper infrastructure is essential for showcasing our athletes’ full potential,” Ikyange noted.

Beyond the stadium, the Commissioner disclosed that the government plans to expand sports infrastructure across various local government areas. He also highlighted the revival of the Governor’s Cup, a grassroots football tournament that has already unearthed promising talents since Governor Alia took office.

Earlier, Olayiwola Ibrahim, a representative of Pitch Perfect Construction Company, assured that the stadium’s renovation adheres to FIFA specifications.

“When we arrived, the stadium was in a severely dilapidated state, with an ordinary sand pitch and no grass. We have completely re-grassed the field and are remodeling the pavilion to include both VIP and regular seating,” Ibrahim explained.

He confirmed that re-grassing will be completed next week, paving the way for other construction phases.

Observers report that the stadium’s transformation is already evident, with visible improvements as work progresses toward completion.
