Federal Ministry of Education Debunks False Report on Return of BEA Scholars

The Federal Ministry of Education has debunked a circulating press release titled “BEA: Education Minister receives committee’s report,” describing it as false and misleading. The statement falsely claims that the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf  Olatunji Alausa, inaugurated a committee to facilitate the reintegration of Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scholars into Nigerian universities following an alleged cancellation of the BEA Programme.

The Ministry firmly clarifies that no such committee has been inaugurated, nor does any reintegration plan for returning BEA scholars exist. The public is urged to disregard the misinformation entirely.

As stated in the Ministry’s official press release dated 07/05/2025, the Federal Government has discontinued the BEA Scholarship Programme in line with a strategic policy shift aimed at prioritizing and strengthening the domestic tertiary education system. This decision followed a thorough policy review, which confirmed that all courses previously offered abroad under the BEA scheme are now available—often at superior standards—within Nigeria’s universities and polytechnics.

Importantly, the Ministry emphasizes that ongoing BEA scholars will continue to receive full government support until they complete their academic programmes. This includes funding for tuition, stipends, and other approved entitlements.

The public is strongly encouraged to rely solely on verified updates from the Ministry's official communication platforms.
