NANS Applauds JAMB’s Transparency, Seeks to Supervise UTME Retake
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for its transparency in addressing the technical glitches that affected the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

In a letter to JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, signed by NANS National President, Olushola Oladoja, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja, the students’ body expressed its interest in monitoring the UTME retake examinations.

Oladoja stated that the request aligns with NANS’ core mandate to safeguard the interests of Nigerian students and promote accountability in educational systems. “We write to commend the Board for its timely and transparent decision to conduct a retake of the 2025 UTME for candidates affected by technical and administrative issues across six states,” he said.

He added that the decision demonstrated JAMB’s commitment to fairness, justice, and the integrity of Nigeria’s education system.

To support the retake exercise, NANS nominated representatives from the six affected states to serve as official supervisors. Oladoja described the nominees as responsible student leaders with proven records of discipline and diligence.

The nominees include:

  • Abia State: Dr. Mike Ifenke and Frank Eme-Orji

  • Anambra State: Ikechukwu Santos and Ebube Ijeoma

  • Ebonyi State: Ibeabuchi Onya and Olisa Nwuruku

  • Enugu State: Chidi Nzekwe and Minister Udochukwu

  • Imo State: Chinaemerem Emesowum and Chidiebere Aguocha

  • Lagos State: Afeez Akinteye and Busari Adelaja

  • NANS expressed confidence in their capacity to support the exercise professionally.

It will be recalled that out of the 1.9 million candidates who sat for the 2025 UTME, over 1.5 million reportedly scored below 200 out of the maximum 400 marks, sparking widespread concern.

Following the public outcry, JAMB engaged top IT and educational assessment experts to probe the matter. During a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, JAMB Registrar Prof. Oloyede admitted that technical issues had compromised the integrity of results from 157 centres, affecting 379,997 candidates.

Overcome with emotion, Oloyede took responsibility for the situation and assured that all affected candidates would be contacted to retake the examination on rescheduled dates.
