The Federal Ministry of Education, under the leadership of Honourable Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Professor Aminu Jubril, former Minister of Education (1985–1989), distinguished academic, diplomat, cardiologist, and elder statesman. Professor Jubril passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2025, in Abuja at the age of 85 after a prolonged illness.
Professor Jubril was a towering presence in Nigeria’s academic and public service landscape. A brilliant medical scholar, he graduated as the best student from the University College Hospital, Ibadan, in 1965 and later obtained a PhD in Medicine from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, in 1972.
Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Jubril served Nigeria with distinction in multiple capacities. He was Minister of Education, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (1989–1992), Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States (1999–2003), Senator representing Adamawa Central (2003–2011), and a Delegate to the National Constitutional Conference (1994–1995), leaving an enduring mark on the nation’s development.
During his tenure as Minister of Education, Professor Jubril spearheaded transformative policies that promoted inclusive, innovative, and strategic growth in the education sector. His legacy of academic excellence, visionary leadership, and dedicated public service continues to inspire and guide the education community and the broader Nigerian society.
