The Federal Ministry of Education has received a petition titled “Petition to Defend Yoruba History from Ethnic Distortion in Nigerian Textbooks,” submitted by the Concerned Citizens of Yoruba Origin and Supporters of Truth, under the leadership of its National Chairman, Otunba Abayomi Odunowo.
The petition raises serious concerns over alleged historical distortions found in a history textbook authored by Tony and Ijeoma Duru, and published by Tones Publishers. Specifically, the content relating to the founding of Ile-Ife has been flagged as misleading and potentially damaging to national unity.
The Ministry wishes to state unequivocally that the textbook in question was neither authored, commissioned, nor approved by the Federal Ministry of Education. It is not listed among the instructional materials sanctioned for use in public basic education institutions across the country, and the Ministry has no affiliation with the publication.
The Ministry commends the vigilance and patriotism of stakeholders in identifying and speaking out against materials that could mislead students and incite ethnic tension. However, it is important to clarify that the Ministry cannot be held accountable for publications that lie outside its regulatory oversight.
All instructional materials officially approved by the Ministry undergo a rigorous vetting process to ensure they align with national education standards. These materials are intended to promote effective learning, uphold literacy goals, and guarantee equitable access to quality education in a way that is inclusive and culturally sensitive.
Nevertheless, in view of the seriousness of the concerns raised and their implications for education, cultural heritage, and national cohesion, the Ministry will collaborate with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and other relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation. Appropriate measures will be taken to address any anomalies identified, ensuring a just and timely resolution that honors historical integrity and supports national unity.
