Niger State Suspends Sallah Festivities in Honour of Flood Victims

Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has announced the suspension of all traditional Sallah celebrations, including the Hawan Bariki, Durbar, and related public events, in solidarity with the victims of the recent catastrophic flood in Mokwa.

The directive, conveyed in a statement on Wednesday by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, stated that the suspension was made “as a mark of respect for the victims of the tragic flood in Mokwa.”

The statement added that the decision is also “intended to allow a period of mourning, prayer, and sober reflection across the state.”

Governor Bago extended his deepest condolences to the affected families and communities, encouraging citizens to honour the sacred Eid period by offering prayers for the departed, supporting those in need, and fostering unity.

The Durbar, a colourful cultural tradition featuring horseback parades, will not take place this year. Its cancellation highlights the state government’s prioritization of humanitarian response over ceremonial customs.

Governor Bago reiterated his administration’s commitment to relief and recovery efforts, assuring residents that both immediate aid and long-term flood mitigation plans are being actively pursued.

“As we commemorate Eid, let us do so with humility, empathy, and a deep sense of community,” the governor urged, calling on all Nigerlites to come together in compassion and resilience.
