The Federal Government has restated its commitment to enhancing the welfare, recognition, and support of teachers across Nigeria as the nation joined the global community to mark the 2025 World Teachers’ Day.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, gave the assurance on Monday during a symposium ahead of the October 5 celebration. This year’s theme is “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession.”
World Teachers’ Day, first proclaimed in 1994 by UNESCO in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Education International (EI), and UNICEF, honours teachers worldwide in line with the 1966 ILO/UNESCO recommendation on the status of teachers.
Dr. Alausa described teachers as custodians of knowledge, builders of character, and architects of the nation’s future. He hailed them as the foundation of every profession, noting their sacrifices sustain society. “Honestly, you have the most important and best profession in the country. Who makes a doctor? Who makes an engineer? Who makes a professor? It is the teacher. That is why government is working assiduously to come up with better packages for you. Light is at the end of the tunnel,” he said.
He stressed that teaching should not be practiced in isolation, adding that collaboration among teachers leads to better outcomes for students through richer instruction and shared responsibility.
The Minister further assured that the government is determined to provide teachers with the recognition, training, and support they need. “When you want the highest quality of education, you need high-quality teachers. And when you want high-quality teachers, you must give them the recognition, support, training, and cooperation they deserve,” he stated.
Dr. Alausa also commended Nigerian teachers for producing world-class graduates excelling globally. “Anywhere in the world, when they say a Nigerian student becomes a professional, they do so well. That’s the output of your work. We know we can’t pay you enough, but be proud of yourselves. On behalf of the President, I commend you for your sacrifices, diligence, and commitment to nation building,” he added.
