The Federal Ministry of Education has launched the Federal Tertiary Institution Governance and Transparency Platform (FTIGTP) — a pioneering digital system aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and data-driven governance across Nigeria’s tertiary education institutions.
The platform was officially unveiled on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. It marks a major milestone in modernizing education management and strengthening public trust through open and accessible institutional data.
In his keynote address, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the FTIGTP as a landmark reform that aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for transparent and accountable governance. According to him, for the first time, Nigeria now has a centralized platform offering real-time, accurate data on enrolment, funding, grants, and performance metrics across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Dr. Alausa stated that the platform will improve institutional planning, budgeting, and international credibility while fostering better policy formulation, public oversight, and value-for-money outcomes. He called on all tertiary institutions to comply with data submission guidelines and maintain transparency, stressing that the FTIGTP is “not just a technological innovation but a reform tool to rebuild confidence and strengthen global competitiveness.”
The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmed, hailed the initiative as a major milestone in advancing data-driven governance in the sector. She explained that the platform supports the Ministry’s digital transformation agenda by providing a unified system for accessing and managing institutional information. Professor Ahmed urged institutions to regularly update the portal to ensure its sustainability and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and national development.
Delivering a goodwill message, Mr. Osita Chidoka, former Minister of Aviation and Chancellor of the Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership, described the initiative as “visionary and transformative.” He emphasized that consistent data reporting and transparency are key to attracting more funding, partnerships, and international collaborations. Chidoka also called for increased investment in education and health, noting that Nigeria’s per capita spending in both sectors remains below global standards.
Speaking on behalf of the Committee of Vice Chancellors, Professor Tanko Ishaya, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos and Chairman of the Committee, commended Dr. Alausa’s leadership in promoting accountability within the education sector. He described the FTIGTP as a timely innovation that will strengthen transparency and reaffirmed the commitment of Vice Chancellors to fully adopt and support the initiative.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Committee of Rectors and Provosts of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, Dr. Salisu Shehu Umar, lauded the Ministry for introducing another reform-driven measure that promotes good governance and institutional transparency. He assured that polytechnics and colleges of education are already integrating the platform in line with the administration’s vision of improved accountability and efficiency.
The Chairman of the Committee of Provosts, Dr. Adamu Ali, also commended the platform as a laudable step toward enhancing academic quality, institutional administration, and national educational development.
Highlighting the technical features of the platform, the Coordinator of the Nigerian Education Data Initiative (NEDI), Mr. Isah Abubakar, demonstrated how the FTIGTP enables real-time data collection, monitoring, and reporting to support evidence-based policymaking across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
The launch of the FTIGTP reaffirms the Federal Government’s commitment to reforming the education sector through innovation, transparency, and collaboration. With this platform, the Ministry has taken a decisive step toward building a more accountable, efficient, and globally competitive tertiary education system for Nigeria.
