The Ogun State Government has confirmed that two of the victims who died in a road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, were foreign nationals.
The crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, near the Danco Filling Station in the Makun area, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.
According to eyewitness accounts, the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the government expressed condolences to the families and associates of the deceased.
Akinmade said the accident happened on the busy expressway within the Makun axis of the state and claimed the lives of two people. He disclosed that Joshua and three others were travelling from Lagos to Sagamu when the incident occurred.
“Preliminary reports indicate that two male foreign nationals died on the spot, and their remains have been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu,” he said.
The statement added that Joshua and the driver were rescued by security personnel attached to his convoy and taken to a hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
It further noted that the severely damaged SUV has been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division office, while efforts are ongoing to tow the truck involved to the same location to aid a comprehensive investigation.
Describing the incident as deeply unfortunate and painful, the state government said the loss of lives was devastating, while other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and are receiving treatment.
The government urged motorists to exercise caution and strictly obey traffic regulations, especially during the festive season when traffic volume is high. It also called on road safety and security agencies to intensify surveillance and enforcement across the state.
“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident,” the statement said, while praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased and the speedy recovery of the injured.
