APGA Unveils Timetable for 2026 Anambra Local Government Primaries

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has released its provisional timetable for the 2026 local government primary elections across Anambra State’s 21 local government areas, scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026.

In a statement issued on Thursday, APGA National Publicity Secretary, Ejimofor Opara, said the timetable was approved in accordance with the party’s constitution and the schedule of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC).

According to the timetable, the sale and submission of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms will take place at APGA’s Awka Regional Secretariat from January 27 to February 6. Screening of chairmanship and councillorship aspirants will be conducted between February 7 and 11 across the state’s 21 local government areas and 326 wards.

Opara stated that appeals arising from the screening exercise would be handled on February 13, while ward congresses to elect councillorship candidates and ad hoc delegates are scheduled for February 14.

“The chairmanship primary election will hold on February 15, while appeals from the primaries will be considered on February 16, all in Awka,” he said.

He disclosed that chairmanship nomination forms will cost ₦6 million, while councillorship forms are priced at ₦600,000. Female aspirants and persons with disabilities will pay 50 per cent of the stipulated fees. He added that all payments are non-refundable and that dates may be adjusted if necessary. The party urged all aspirants to strictly comply with the guidelines and electoral regulations.

ANSIEC had earlier released the timetable and guidelines for the 2026 local government elections on December 5, 2025. The commission confirmed that the polls will be held across the 21 local government areas of Anambra State on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

ANSIEC Chairperson, Genevieve Osakwe, said the commission is committed to conducting free and fair elections, describing local government polls as a vital part of the democratic process.

She added that political party primaries would run from December 18, 2025, to February 16, 2026, stressing that campaigns must be issue-based and conducted only in public places. Campaigns, she said, would not be allowed in churches, mosques, shrines, barracks, police stations, or secret locations.

Osakwe further noted that candidates would be required to pay non-refundable administrative deposits for their nominations to be valid.
