The Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, Dr. David Oyedepo, has urged newly admitted students to embrace discipline and resist peer pressure as essential steps to achieving their goals.
Delivering his address at the 24th Matriculation Ceremony on Friday, Oyedepo stressed that while discipline can be challenging, its outcome is invaluable. He warned that the pain of regret far outweighs the temporary discomfort of self-control.
“Pay today and play tomorrow, or play today and pay tomorrow. No one will be more accomplished in his pursuit than he or she who is disciplined,” Oyedepo said. He also encouraged students to take their studies seriously, noting, “The worth of anyone’s time defines the worth of his life.”
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Timothy Anake, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to investing in world-class infrastructure to support seamless learning. He urged the new students to embrace Covenant University’s seven core values: spirituality, possibility mentality, capacity building, integrity, responsibility, diligence, and sacrifice.
The Pro-Chancellor, Pastor Faith Oyedepo, also addressed the students, emphasising that focus and discipline pave the path to greatness. She highlighted the importance of good character, cautioning that without it, talent could become a liability. “Pursue your programmes with first-class character,” she said, stressing that higher education is a journey requiring focus to reach one’s destination intact.
A total of 3,070 students, 2,440 undergraduates and 630 postgraduates were formally matriculated into the university for the 2025/2026 academic session.
