Kwara Assembly Approves ₦656.5bn 2026 Budget with ₦10.5bn Increase

The Kwara State House of Assembly has passed the 2026 Appropriation Bill, approving a total budget of ₦656.5 billion — an increase of ₦10.5 billion over the figure initially submitted by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The budget was approved on Friday after the House considered and adopted the report of its Committee on Finance and Appropriation during plenary.

Announcing the passage, Speaker Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi Salihu explained that the upward review followed a careful scrutiny of the estimates to ensure fiscal realism and effective implementation in the interest of Kwarans.

“The revised budget reflects the House’s commitment to ensuring that government spending aligns with developmental priorities and economic realities,” he said.

A breakdown of the approved budget shows recurrent expenditure has been increased to over ₦409.6 billion, marking a ₦10.5 billion adjustment from the initial proposal submitted by the executive.

Capital expenditure allocation has also been raised to ₦271 billion, up from ₦254 billion, to support key infrastructure and development projects across the state. The Speaker said this adjustment was necessary to fast-track critical projects and enhance service delivery in line with the administration’s development agenda.

Debt servicing for the 2026 fiscal year now stands at ₦14.2 billion, slightly higher than previously projected, Danladi-Salihu added.

“The House carefully examined the budget in line with constitutional provisions and resolved to approve a realistic and implementable budget that will bring maximum benefits to the people of Kwara State,” he said, assuring that the legislature would continue exercising its oversight role to guarantee prudent implementation and accountability in public spending.
