Beautiful Nubia Alleges Plagiarism by Yinka Ayefele and BBO

Veteran Nigerian folk and roots musician, Beautiful Nubia, has accused gospel artistes Yinka Ayefele and Bakare Boluwatife Oluwatobi, popularly known as BBO, of lifting melodies from his 1997 album project, Seven Lifes.

In a post shared Thursday on X (formerly Twitter), the music icon made his allegations public, claiming that both artistes drew inspiration directly from his original work without due acknowledgment.

He wrote:

“There was Yinka Ayefele with ‘My Faith in God (Igbagbo Ireti)’ in 2012 and now someone called BBO with ‘Amin’ this year.

Both stole their melodies from our original song ‘Seven Lifes.’”

Expressing his frustration, Beautiful Nubia questioned the culture of intellectual property compliance within the gospel music space.

“When will Nigerians (especially the so-called gospel musicians) learn to respect copyright?” he asked.

Released in 1997, Seven Lifes remains one of Beautiful Nubia’s notable projects, reflecting his distinctive fusion of folk, roots, and socially conscious music.

The allegations have reignited conversations around melody originality and copyright enforcement in Nigeria’s music industry, a sector where disputes over creative ownership frequently spark public debate.
