An early-morning fire on Wednesday razed several shops at the Electronics Parts Market in Nnewi, Anambra State, destroying goods estimated to be worth millions of naira.
The incident occurred in the Nnewi North Local Government Area and affected about five shops within a one-storey building. Items lost included electrical appliances and various electronic components.
Although no casualties were recorded, traders were seen lamenting their losses, with one shop owner saying he had just restocked his store twice before the fire broke out.
Eyewitnesses said the exact cause could not be immediately determined, though a power surge was suspected. Emergency responders promptly disconnected electricity lines at the scene to prevent electrocution and limit further damage.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Fire Service said its personnel responded quickly after receiving a distress call. Fire Chief Chukwudi Chiketa stated that the blaze began around 9 a.m. and was swiftly contained, preventing it from spreading to other shops in the building.
He noted that while five upstairs shops were destroyed, many others on both floors were saved. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and residents and traders have been advised to stay vigilant and equip their shops with fire extinguishers as a precaution.
