Bridging Differences: Charly Boy Opens Up on Rare Friendship With Olusegun Obasanjo

The veteran entertainer Charly Boy has shed light on the depth of his unusual bond with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing it as an “uncommon relationship” built on mutual respect, understanding, and shared concern for Nigeria’s future.

Posting on X, the outspoken activist noted that many Nigerians have often expressed surprise at his closeness to a former head of state.

“People wondered how someone who constantly challenges authority could be so connected to a former head of state,” he said, adding that life is not always “black and white” and that respect can create bridges where least expected.

According to him, Obasanjo recognized qualities in him that others sometimes overlook, including courage, consistency, and a firm commitment to truth. In return, Charly Boy said he sees beyond the elder statesman’s military and presidential past, viewing him as a leader who endured war, governance pressures, and national challenges while remaining resilient.

He stressed that their relationship is private and not for publicity, explaining that their conversations often center on national issues. “We may argue, we may disagree, but respect is always intact,” he said.

He pointed to the moment Obasanjo personally hosted the launch of his autobiography, 999, as the clearest demonstration of their mutual regard. The entertainer described the occasion as the most significant milestone of his career, saying it symbolized honour and recognition rather than commercial success.

“That day was not about selling books,” he recalled. “It was about acknowledgement. It was about an elder saying, ‘I see you.’”

Charly Boy concluded that their connection shows how dialogue and respect between strong personalities can help build bridges in a divided society.
