Ex-NEXIM MD Robert Orya Sentenced to 490 Years for N2.4bn Fraud

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has sentenced former Nigerian Export-Import (NEXIM) Bank Managing Director, Robert Orya, to 490 years in prison for fraud totaling N2.4 billion.

Justice F. E. Messiri delivered the judgment on Thursday, sentencing Orya to 10 years’ imprisonment on each of the 49 counts filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), with the sentences set to run concurrently.

Orya, who led NEXIM between 2009 and 2016, was arraigned in November 2021 on 49 charges relating to fraud and abuse of office. The EFCC alleged that he used his position to fraudulently obtain over N1.4 billion from the bank.

According to the anti-graft agency, Orya incorporated a company while in office and allegedly used the names of non-existent individuals and others without their consent to secure loans, which remained unpaid for several years.
