FUOYE VC Calls for Innovation to Sustain Institutional Growth

The outgoing Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Fasina, has urged the university to embrace creativity, strategic thinking, and innovative approaches beyond conventional methods to sustain growth and maintain institutional stability.

Speaking at his valedictory lecture in Oye Ekiti on Friday titled “FUOYE: My Stewardship”, Fasina highlighted the university’s progress over his five-year tenure in scholarship, infrastructure, human capacity development, and partnerships. He advised FUOYE to remain committed to its 25-Year Strategic Plan (2025–2050), which outlines pathways to becoming a future-ready, innovation-led, globally competitive institution.

“I have always wanted to build an institution anchored on integrity, innovation, and excellence. My aim was to mentor young academics and nurture thinkers and administrators who will carry this mission forward,” Fasina said. He noted that all items on his 20-point development agenda, presented in 2021, were achieved to varying degrees, transforming FUOYE significantly.

Under his leadership, the university expanded from eight to 18 faculties, increased academic programs from 73 to 91, grew directorates from one to 19, established five institutes, and expanded departments from 67 to 81. He also emphasized infrastructure development, dubbing his legacy the “Blue Roof Legacy”, with 160 projects completed over five years.

Fasina called on staff and students to support institutional growth by avoiding disruptions to academic activities and encouraged stronger collaboration between the university council and management. He also urged FUOYE to strengthen industry linkages, establish industrial park models, and diversify revenue through grants, partnerships, endowments, and consultancy services.

Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba SAN, FUOYE Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council Chairman, praised Fasina’s tenure, noting the university’s remarkable progress across programs, facilities, student enrollment, and recognition compared to peer institutions.

Incoming VC, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, was urged to continue with resilience, creativity, and energy to advance the university further. The event was chaired by Prof. Adenike Oladiji, VC of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, who described Fasina as “a man of great determination and achievement,” highlighting lessons in resilience for university administrators.
