A viral social media report claiming that Abia State Governor Alex Otti had dragged the Federal Government of Nigeria to an international tribunal over the non-approval of a cargo airport in Aba has been dismissed as false and deliberately misleading.
In a statement on Monday, the Abia State Government clarified that no such lawsuit exists, and that Governor Otti neither authorized nor initiated any legal action at any global court. The government described the claim as a fabricated narrative aimed at stirring controversy and potentially inflaming ethnic tensions.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, emphasized that aviation and airport approvals in Nigeria follow clearly defined national processes, and that international litigation had never been contemplated. He also refuted claims suggesting the governor had petitioned any global tribunal over the alleged mistreatment of Igbo people, calling such assertions “invented” and politically motivated.
Kanu urged Nigerians and media practitioners to verify information from credible sources before sharing or publishing, warning that misinformation could undermine national unity and public trust.
Governor Otti’s office reiterated its commitment to constructive engagement with federal authorities, lawful governance, and sustainable development in Abia State, while condemning deliberate attempts to misrepresent facts for political gain.
The incident underscores the growing impact of misinformation in Nigeria’s political landscape, highlighting the need for careful reporting and public discernment.
