Eric Dane, the actor renowned for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has passed away less than a year after publicly disclosing his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Dane, 53, captivated audiences as family patriarch Cal Jacobs on HBO’s teen drama Euphoria and became a household name as Dr. Mark Sloan, famously nicknamed “Dr. McSteamy,” on Grey’s Anatomy.
The California-born actor revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025 and dedicated his final months to raising awareness and funds for the motor neurone disease. His family shared in a statement: “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS.”
Dane was married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, and together they had two daughters, Billie and Georgia. His family noted that he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones, “who were the center of his world.”
“He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received,” the statement added.
Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane made his television debut on The Wonder Years in 1993. He later appeared in Charmed and The Last Ship, and starred in films including Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, and Burlesque.
