Kings Park Rangers have announced the suspension of their upcoming match following the tragic death of Nigerian winger Saburi Adeniji, who played for the club in Halstead, Essex.
Adeniji passed away in hospital on Friday, after being admitted to intensive care on January 25 with a severe brain stem injury. The club rallied around his family, who had traveled from Nigeria to be with him but arrived after his passing.
A fundraising appeal launched to support Adeniji’s family has raised over £16,000 of its £17,000 target, to help cover expenses including travel and accommodation. Medical staff reportedly delayed switching off life support in the hope that his family would arrive in time to say goodbye.
In an emotional statement on Saturday, Kings Park Rangers said:
"We would also like to share that we have another big week ahead emotionally as a club, with the closure and funeral of our king, Saburi. This is a very difficult time for everyone connected to the club, and we continue to stand together to support one another and Saburi’s loved ones who are now in the UK."
The club confirmed that their scheduled game against The Castlemen will not go ahead, adding:
"Our game against @TheCastlemen will not go ahead, and we will return to football on the 21st. Thank you again for the strength, respect and support you’ve shown us all. It truly means everything."
Adeniji’s passing has had a profound impact on Kings Park Rangers, with teammates, fans, and the club mourning the loss of a talented and dearly loved player.
