The Lagos State Government has announced a four-week partial closure of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway to enable the Federal Ministry of Works to rehabilitate deteriorating sections of the vital roadway.
The closure will begin on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, and is expected to last until Wednesday, March 11, 2026, covering stretches from U-Turn Bus Stop to Sango Tollgate, according to Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the state Commissioner for Transportation. The announcement was made via the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation’s official X handle on Tuesday.
To reduce traffic disruption, the rehabilitation will be carried out in two phases:
Phase One (Feb 11 – Mar 4) will affect Abeokuta-bound traffic, with vehicles diverted to one half of the carriageway, approximately 20 metres from the active work zone. Traffic on the Lagos-bound side will remain unaffected during this phase. Construction will proceed on one lane at a time, with traffic redirected to newly rehabilitated sections as work progresses.
Phase Two (Mar 4 – Mar 11) will focus on Lagos-bound traffic, specifically the stretch from Obadeyi Bus Stop to Ekoro Junction. Vehicles will be diverted similarly to one side of the road while the other lane undergoes rehabilitation. Traffic moving toward Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate will continue uninterrupted.
Osiyemi assured motorists that adequate traffic management measures would be in place throughout the project and urged road users to plan journeys carefully, obey traffic signage, and cooperate with officials. He also appealed for patience, describing the repairs as critical for the safety and efficiency of one of the region’s busiest highways.
The announcement comes amid ongoing infrastructure interventions on major federal highways in Lagos and surrounding areas, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving road safety and travel efficiency for commuters.
