The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued an operative of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) who was knocked down by a speeding truck along Offin Canal, inward Eko Bridge, Lagos.
The incident was disclosed on Friday in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa.
According to the statement, the heavily laden containerised truck struck the male LAWMA operative, identified as Mr. Baba Ibeji, while he was carrying out his official refuse evacuation duties.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the articulated vehicle, reportedly speeding, suffered a brake failure while descending the CMS Bridge connecting Offin Canal to Eko Bridge. The mechanical fault caused the driver to lose control, leading to the truck knocking down the LAWMA worker before crashing into and crushing a Toyota Camry with registration number FST 417 FS.
Giwa said LASTMA officers on traffic surveillance within the area swiftly intervened and successfully rescued the severely injured LAWMA operative from beneath the wreckage of the truck.
The victim was immediately rushed by his colleagues to a nearby Fuja Hospital but was reportedly denied admission due to the seriousness of his injuries. He was subsequently transferred to the General Hospital for urgent and specialised medical attention.
In what was described as a condemnable act, the truck driver reportedly fled the scene after the accident. However, LASTMA operatives arrested the truck assistant, commonly known as the motor boy, who was handed over to security operatives led by the Divisional Traffic Officer (DTO) of the Ebute-Ero Police Division, Lagos Island, for further investigation.
Giwa condemned the reckless and irresponsible behaviour that led to the crash and directed relevant security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation. He said a detailed report would guide possible prosecution in line with existing laws.
