Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has appointed Nollywood star Mercy Johnson-Okojie as Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy, marking a significant move that brings the award-winning actress into a formal government role.
The appointment was announced in an official statement on Thursday, with the state government noting that Johnson-Okojie’s widespread public appeal and experience in humanitarian initiatives would strengthen communication between the administration and citizens.
According to the statement, her responsibilities will focus on enhancing public awareness of government programmes, promoting community participation, and supporting advocacy efforts aimed at improving social welfare and development outcomes across the state.
The government also highlighted her track record in charitable outreach, particularly in areas related to women’s empowerment, child welfare, education support, and healthcare interventions, describing her as well-suited to bridge the gap between policymakers and grassroots communities.
Her appointment signals the administration’s intention to leverage influential public figures to boost civic engagement and public trust, as Edo State intensifies efforts to expand citizen participation in governance.
