Nigerian singer and songwriter Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has addressed controversy surrounding some of her past social media posts, insisting they were misinterpreted and had no connection to any improper conduct.
The clarification followed renewed online debate after the artiste condemned rape during discussions sparked by the trending Mirabel TikToker case. She had stated that men should stop raping women and that offenders deserved strict punishment, noting that many women she knows have experienced sexual assault. Her comments triggered heated exchanges with opposing voices online.
After days of criticism from trolls on X, the singer released a statement Sunday explaining that she was alerted to old tweets she made years ago and felt compelled to provide context.
She said the posts dated back to 2012 when she was less publicly known, living with her mother and helping at her daycare while pursuing her music career. According to her, she used social media at the time to casually share everyday experiences, including lighthearted observations about children at the daycare.
Simi explained that the tweets reflected innocent remarks about kids she found amusing or adorable, stressing that none of them were written with any inappropriate intent. She added that she would not allow her past comments to be distorted to support what she described as false narratives.
The singer also disclosed that some of the posts had recently been deleted because of the sensitivity of the situation for her family, though she initially did not want them removed.
The renewed scrutiny began after social media users circulated screenshots of posts from 2012 and 2013, including messages that some readers interpreted controversially. Responding, Simi maintained she has never had depraved intentions and reiterated that her stance against rape and sexual violence has always been consistent.
“I have always spoken against rape and sexual assault, even before you knew I existed. It’s not a costume I’m wearing, it’s who I am. I said stop raping women. I stand by it,” she stated.
The situation continues to spark debate across social platforms, with divided opinions over how the resurfaced posts should be interpreted.
