Pregnant Wunmi Mosaku Wins Best Supporting Actress Prize for Sinners

British-Nigerian actress Wunmi Mosaku has clinched the Best Supporting Actress honour at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Film Awards for her performance in Sinners, delivering an emotional acceptance speech while heavily pregnant a moment widely celebrated by fans and industry watchers.

Mosaku beat strong contenders including Teyana Taylor for One Battle After Another and Emily Watson for Hamnet to secure the prestigious award. The victory marks her second BAFTA recognition, following her 2017 television win for Best Supporting Actress in Damilola, Our Loved Boy. She was also nominated in 2021 for Best Leading Actress for her role in the horror film His House.

Her portrayal of Annie in Sinners has been widely described as a defining performance in her career. During her speech, she dedicated the award to her daughter, saying, “To my daughter, you are my greatest teacher. I am so proud of you, everything begins and ends with you.”

Reflecting on the role, Mosaku said she discovered a personal connection to the character, explaining that she found within Annie elements of her own hopes, ancestral strength, and identity parts she felt she once tried to suppress while adjusting to life as an immigrant.

She also expressed gratitude to director Ryan Coogler, crediting his guidance and cultural vision on set and noting she felt a strong sense of ancestral pride throughout the production.

The win further solidifies Mosaku’s standing as one of the most accomplished British-Nigerian actresses, highlighting both her artistic excellence and the cultural heritage that shapes her work.
