Ramadan, Lent Commence as Crescent Moon Is Sighted

The President of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of Ramadan 2026.

This was disclosed in a statement issued yesterday by Sambo Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council. According to the statement, verified reports of the moon sighting were received from different parts of Nigeria and were thoroughly examined and authenticated.

Speaking on behalf of the Sultan, Shehu Abubakar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi announced that Muslims across the country would commence the Ramadan fast today.

“After due verification and authentication of the reports received from across the country, the Sultanate Council has accepted the sighting of the new moon. Consequently, Wednesday, February 18, 2026, marks the first day of Ramadan 1447AH,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the Christian Lenten season also begins today, with Catholic faithful observing Ash Wednesday, marking the start of a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection ahead of Easter.
