Afrobeats star Simi (Simisola Kosoko) has stirred widespread reactions after calling for severe punishment for rapists amid growing concern over sexual assault cases in Nigeria.
The country has seen a surge in reported sexual assault allegations across several regions in recent weeks, prompting public discussion and outrage.
Reacting Tuesday night on X, the singer urged citizens and authorities to take stronger action against sexual violence. In her post, she expressed anger over the situation and suggested harsh penalties for offenders.
Her comments quickly sparked controversy online, with critics arguing that similar punishments should apply to individuals who make false accusations. In response, Simi clarified that her stance was focused on defending victims of assault, not those falsely accused, a position that further fueled debate.
Addressing backlash from some male followers, she said she was speaking out because many women she knows have experienced sexual assault at some point in their lives. She added that concerns about false accusations should not silence discussions about sexual violence.
