Thomas Tuchel has extended his tenure as head coach of the England national football team, signing a new contract that will keep him in charge through Euro 2028 in the UK and Ireland.
Tuchel, 52, was appointed England coach in October 2024, succeeding Gareth Southgate. Under his leadership, England achieved an unbeaten qualification record for the 2026 World Cup in North America, winning all eight group-stage matches.
“I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England,” Tuchel said. “I have loved every minute of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity, and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud.”
The Football Association (FA) described the new agreement as providing “clarity and full focus” for England’s preparations ahead of the World Cup. Tuchel’s previous contract had only run until the conclusion of the 2026 tournament.
Prior to signing the new England deal, Tuchel had been linked to Manchester United as a potential permanent successor to sacked manager Ruben Amorim. However, the extension appears to rule out a post-World Cup move to Old Trafford, even as caretaker boss Michael Carrick has steadied the English giants’ recent form.
With Euro 2028 now firmly in view, Tuchel’s focus will remain on guiding England through international tournaments, building on a strong start that has positioned the national team as one of Europe’s most formidable sides.
