WAFCON 2026 Kicks Off in Morocco: Africa’s Women’s Football Goes Bigger Than Ever

The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) is officially confirmed to go ahead in Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) reaffirming the North African country as host amid recent speculation about potential changes.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that despite rumours of relocation, the tournament will remain on its original schedule and in Morocco, underlining its vital role as part of the qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. 

The 2026 edition marks a major milestone in African women’s football the finals have been expanded to include a record 16 teams, up from 12, reflecting the rapid growth and investment in the women’s game across the continent.

The eagerly awaited final draw was held in Rabat in January, placing the teams in four groups for the first time under the expanded format. Morocco, as hosts, are seeded in Group A, while nine‑time champions Super Falcons of Nigeria anchor Group C alongside Zambia, Egypt, and Malawi with all sides expected to provide thrilling clashes on the pitch.

The expanded roster features traditional powerhouses like South Africa women's national football team and Ghana women's national football team, along with emerging sides such as Harambee Starlets, who sealed their historic qualification after a dramatic win over The Gambia a landmark moment for Kenyan women’s football. 

WAFCON’s expanded format not only increases competitiveness but also gives smaller nations a bigger stage to showcase talent. The tournament is expected to be broadcast across Africa and internationally, drawing increased attention from fans, sponsors, and scouts alike.

With the finals less than six weeks away, anticipation continues to build. Fans are already gearing up for an unforgettable celebration of African women’s football one that promises powerful performances, rising stars, and continental pride.
