Birmingham, Alabama — A 19-year-old man shot and killed his 24-year-old wife before taking his own life at Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital, moments after the couple welcomed their first child, in a shocking domestic tragedy.
Authorities reported that the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Homewood Police Department described it as an “apparent murder-suicide” and confirmed that no other patients or hospital staff were harmed. It remains unclear whether the newborn was present at the time of the shooting.
Family sources revealed the couple had experienced marital tensions leading up to the birth. Terry’s mother noted he had completed Army National Guard training prior to the marriage. Johnson had reportedly requested that Terry’s family not be present during the delivery.
Hospital officials responded quickly, placing the facility on lockdown until authorities could confirm there was no ongoing threat to patients or staff.
Danne Howard, president of the Alabama Hospital Association, described the event as “an isolated incident” unprecedented in her three decades in the state’s healthcare system. The hospital will review its security protocols and incorporate lessons from a mandatory after-action report to prevent future tragedies.
This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding domestic violence and public safety in healthcare settings, underscoring the need for robust security measures in hospitals nationwide.
