Doguwa Takes Over as Kano APC Chairman, 2,420 Delegates Elect New Executive

Umar Haruna Doguwa has emerged as the new Kano State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), following a decisive endorsement by 2,420 accredited delegates at the party’s state congress.

The former Commissioner for Water Resources clinched the position in the early hours of Wednesday during the congress held in Kano, where delegates from all 44 local government areas adopted him and other consensus candidates through a voice vote. The exercise was supervised by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The chairmanship seat was zoned to Kano South Senatorial District, Doguwa’s home base, in line with internal party arrangements. He succeeds Abdullahi Abbas, who held the position for about a decade.

Doguwa had resigned from Governor Abba Yusuf’s cabinet ahead of the congress to contest for the party’s top state office.

Chairman of the State Congress Committee, Rabiu Bichi, described the exercise as credible and transparent, noting that INEC’s presence reinforced the legitimacy of the process.

In his acceptance speech, Doguwa pledged to unify party members and strengthen its structures across Kano.

“I am humbled by the trust of our delegates and party leaders. My focus will be to unite every member and strengthen our structures across Kano State.

Outgoing chairman Abdullahi Abbas called the congress a joyous milestone for the party and urged members to rally behind the new leadership.

Governor Abba Yusuf also congratulated the newly elected executives, stressing that discipline, unity, and commitment would determine the party’s future success in the state.

“The success of this party in Kano depends on discipline, unity, and commitment. I urge the new leadership to work tirelessly to achieve our shared vision,” the governor said.

Other officials elected include Salisu Majje Ahmed Gwangwazo as Deputy Chairman; Prof. Yusuf Mohammed as Secretary; Nura Yaro as Assistant Secretary; Abdul Adamu (SAN) as Legal Adviser; Bashir Yusuf as Assistant Legal Adviser; and Farouq Abdullahi Garo as Financial Secretary.

Also sworn in were Salisu Yahaya as Youth Leader; Musadiq Wazari as Assistant Youth Leader; Abubakar Salisu as Auditor; and Hajiya Fatima Abdullahi Dala as Women Leader, among others.
