False Rape Accuser Jailed in UK After Costly Police Investigations

A court in the United Kingdom has sentenced a 31-year-old woman to four and a half years in prison after she admitted making false rape allegations against multiple men she met through dating applications.

The woman, Stacey Sharples, from Farnworth in Bolton, pleaded guilty at Bolton Crown Court to 10 counts of perverting the course of justice. Her claims prompted extensive police investigations that led to arrests and forensic examinations before officers eventually determined the accusations were fabricated.

Authorities estimate that the investigations cost taxpayers about £120,000, while none of the men accused were charged with any offence.

According to investigators, Sharples even contacted one of the men after police dropped the case and boasted that she had escaped consequences, telling him: “I’ve got away with it. Yet again.”

Greater Manchester Police said the decision to investigate Sharples as a suspect was unusual but became necessary once evidence began to contradict her accounts. Detective Sergeant Steven Gilliland explained that officers initially handled the complaints as genuine allegations, conducting full inquiries before concluding the reports were false.

For the men involved, the impact was profound. One of the victims, Reece Lockett, said the accusation shattered his life. He told the court his parents disowned him, his partner left, and he lost his job while living under constant fear and anxiety.

Another victim, Connor Austen, said the ordeal cost him his home, relationship and career, adding that the false claim derailed seven years of his life.
