Gunmen on Wednesday abducted four cocoa farmers at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria in the Idi-Ayunre area of Ibadan, authorities confirmed.
The victims were reportedly at the institute for a familiarisation visit when six armed assailants emerged from the bush and intercepted their vehicle on the way to the Nursing Section, according to a farmer who managed to escape.
The Police Public Relations Officer of Oyo State, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed the incident, noting that one of the four kidnapped farmers has already been rescued and his vehicle recovered.
Olayinka added that the state Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, has directed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and other tactical teams to reinforce the Divisional Police Officer at Idi-Ayunre.
He said operatives have commenced an intensive bush combing operation, and the rescued victim is currently in safe custody and undergoing debriefing.
“Efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining victims and apprehend the perpetrators,” Olayinka stated, as authorities work to bring the situation under control.
