The Oyo State Police Command has commenced an investigation following the circulation of a viral video in which an individual identified as Shawama claimed responsibility for killing 32 people.
The Command clarified that there is no record of Shawama ever being arrested by its operatives.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said the Command is treating the matter with utmost seriousness.
“As a responsible and responsive agency, the Command has launched a thorough investigation into the allegations and the confessional statements contained in the video. The investigation is being conducted leveraging advanced technology, including digital forensics and digital footprint analysis, to ensure a robust and credible outcome,” the statement read.
The police appealed to members of the public to provide useful information that could aid in identifying and apprehending Shawama and any accomplices.
“The Command further appeals to members of the public with information that can lead to the identification and arrest of Shawama or his accomplices to come forward and assist law enforcement in bringing them to justice,” Olayinka stated.
He assured that updates on the progress and outcome of the investigation would be made available in due course.
In the Yoruba-language video, Shawama was heard saying, “When they wanted to misbehave in Ibadan, I killed 32.” He also alleged that security agencies had freed him and commended his actions.
The video also featured other individuals expressing support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election, stating, “Even without elections, you have won.
