Trump Says He “Doesn’t Care” if Iran Plays in 2026 World Cup Amid Tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he “really doesn’t care” whether Iran participates in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the United States, Canada, and Mexico are set to co-host. The remark came in an interview with Politico, in which Trump referred to Iran as “a very badly defeated country” running “on fumes.”

The comments come amid growing uncertainty over Iran’s participation in the tournament. Although Iran qualified by topping its Asian group, the team was the only nation absent from a recent FIFA planning summit in Atlanta, fueling speculation about whether the country will send its squad to the World Cup.

Concerns over Iran’s involvement are tied to escalating regional tensions involving the U.S. and Israel, as well as logistical and safety considerations. The president of Iran’s football federation, Mehdi Taj, has indicated that participation may be unlikely under current circumstances.

Trump’s statement underscores the political backdrop surrounding the tournament but does not influence the official status of Iran’s team. FIFA and relevant sporting authorities retain sole authority over participation decisions.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to feature matches in major U.S. cities including Los Angeles and Seattle, is expected to draw international attention, with Iran’s potential absence adding to the ongoing geopolitical discourse.
