U.S. Embassy in Abuja Suspends Visa Appointments Over Security Fears Amid Global Tensions

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has temporarily cancelled all visa appointments in Abuja due to heightened security concerns, citing the potential for protests in the Federal Capital Territory. The suspension affects appointments scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, 2026, and was announced as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of staff and applicants.

In an official statement, the Embassy highlighted that demonstrations linked to international developments — particularly escalating tensions between the United States and Iran — could pose security risks. The move reflects the Embassy’s prioritisation of public safety amid uncertainty in the capital.

“Due to the potential for protests in Abuja, all visa appointments scheduled for March 4 have been cancelled,” the Embassy said. “We remain committed to the safety of our applicants and staff and will provide updates on rescheduling.”

Applicants affected by the cancellation will be contacted directly with instructions on how to reschedule their appointments. While visa interviews in Abuja are paused for the day, the Embassy emphasised that its consular services in both Abuja and Lagos remain operational.

The Embassy also issued a security advisory for U.S. citizens in Nigeria, urging them to avoid large gatherings, remain vigilant, and follow local news updates to minimise exposure to potential demonstrations.

The cancellation comes amid growing global attention to tensions in the Middle East, which have sparked demonstrations in various countries, including Nigeria. Nigerian authorities and Embassy officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure public safety.

The U.S. Embassy has reassured the public that visa services will resume once the security situation stabilises, reaffirming its commitment to providing consistent and secure consular operations in Nigeria.
