U.S. Special Education Teacher Charged with Repeated Abuse of 10-Year-Old Student

A 32-year-old special education teacher, Mahayla Benavides, has been charged with multiple child sexual abuse-related offences following allegations of repeated abuse involving a 10-year-old student in Spokane, United States.

According to investigators, the alleged incidents took place within the classroom, including in a smaller room and another secluded area. Authorities say the child reported that the abuse occurred multiple times a day on some occasions.

Police further allege that the suspect warned the victim not to disclose the incidents, reportedly stating that she could lose her job if the matter became known. During the course of the investigation, officials also recovered evidence from the suspect’s phone.

In his account to authorities, the child stated that he had at one point asked about receiving gifts, to which the suspect allegedly mentioned giving him brownies.

Benavides has since been formally charged, and a bond has been set at $500,000 as legal proceedings continue. Authorities have not released additional details, citing the sensitivity of the case and the need to protect the identity of the minor.
