Yusuf Maitama Tuggar Resigns from Cabinet Ahead of 2027 Bauchi Governorship Race

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has formally resigned from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet to pursue the Bauchi State governorship in the 2027 elections.

The Ministry confirmed the development on Monday through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, stating that Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to the President shortly after noon. He plans to contest under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform.

Tuggar’s resignation follows a presidential directive issued earlier in March, which instructed all political appointees seeking elective positions to step down by March 31, 2026. The order, communicated via the office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, applies to ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior and junior aides, personal assistants, and heads of federal agencies.

The directive is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, aimed at preventing conflicts of interest as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
