CKay Opens Up About Sacrifices for Music Career: “I Ran Away From Home and Dropped Out of University”

Nigerian singer CKay has revealed the sacrifices he made to pursue his music career, including disobeying his parents and leaving university.

Speaking during a recent Twitch livestream with streamer Caterefe, the “Love Nwantiti” hitmaker disclosed that his parents did not approve of his music ambitions, prompting him to abscond from home in Kaduna at the age of 19.

“I came down to Lagos to chase my passion in music. When I arrived, I wrote a long letter and sent it to my mum via Blackberry,” CKay said. “Initially, I was staying with one of my friends, but later got a one-room apartment. I was making money as a producer, working with four different studios. At some point, I had to drop out of university at just 100 level to focus on music.”

CKay first gained prominence in 2018 with his breakout track, “Container.” His 2019 single, “Love Nwantiti,” became a global sensation, breaking numerous African music records, with the original version surpassing one billion streams on Spotify.
