The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed a viral “wanted” poster featuring Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, describing it as false and misleading.
In a statement shared on its official social media platforms on Thursday, the anti-graft agency stamped the circulating image “FAKE NEWS” and warned those responsible for its creation and distribution to desist from spreading misinformation.
“Clout chaser, stop this now!” the commission wrote in a strongly worded caption accompanying the debunking.
The doctored poster, which gained widespread attention online, falsely alleged that Sabinus was wanted for obtaining money by false pretence. It also listed a purported address in Victoria Island, Lagos, and closely mimicked the EFCC’s official design and format typically used in declaring suspects wanted.
Preliminary findings indicate that the image was manipulated to appear authentic, raising concerns about the growing trend of digital misinformation and impersonation of official institutions.
The EFCC did not disclose whether it has identified or is pursuing those behind the fake publication.
Sabinus, a widely followed content creator known for his comedic skits, has yet to publicly respond to the incident at the time of filing this report.
The commission reiterated its longstanding warning to the public to verify information from credible and official sources before sharing, stressing the dangers of spreading unverified content in the digital age.
