Musk Raises Alarm in Court, Warns AI Could Become Humanity’s Greatest Threat or Breakthrough

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has issued a stark warning about the future of artificial intelligence, cautioning that the rapidly advancing technology could either revolutionise humanity or pose a serious existential risk.

Speaking during a court appearance in California as part of his legal battle against OpenAI, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO expressed deep concerns about the unchecked development of AI.

“It could kill us all,” Musk told the court, stressing the dangers of advancing the technology without adequate safeguards.

Drawing comparisons from popular culture, Musk warned against a dystopian future similar to The Terminator, while advocating for a more optimistic path akin to Star Trek. “We don’t want a Terminator outcome, we want a Gene Roddenberry vision,” he said, referencing the creator of the iconic sci-fi franchise.

The testimony comes amid Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI, a company he co-founded in 2015. He alleges that the organisation has deviated from its original non-profit mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity and has instead shifted towards profit-making. OpenAI has denied the claims.

Musk also reflected on a past conversation with Google co-founder Larry Page, recalling that Page held a more optimistic view of AI’s potential to create a utopian future an outlook Musk described as dangerously dismissive of possible risks.

According to Musk, Page once referred to him as a “specieist” for prioritising human survival over the potential of digital life forms.

Reinforcing his concerns, Musk warned that artificial intelligence could soon surpass human intelligence, noting that such a turning point may be closer than many expect.

“That day is approaching fast,” he said, emphasising the urgent need for oversight as major tech companies continue to push the boundaries of AI development.

He also highlighted the role of his brain-chip company, Neuralink, suggesting that integrating human intelligence with AI could help create a safer balance.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Musk’s remarks extended beyond the courtroom, painting a future filled with both promise and peril, where humanity must carefully navigate the path of technological advancement.
