Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of Aminu Abubakar, a recent graduate of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, whose lifeless body was discovered near the Central Bank of Nigeria area in Zone 8, Lokoja, two weeks ago.
According to ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the arrests were the result of a coordinated, intelligence-led operation by the Kogi State Police Command. The investigation also led to the recovery of the victim’s stolen tricycle.
Aminu, a resident of the Otokiti area of Lokoja, had recently graduated and was awaiting mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps. He reportedly left home with his tricycle to earn his daily income but never returned, sparking alarm among family members.
Police investigations revealed that the suspects, identified as Garba Godwin Ibrahim and Ashema Usman Samson, allegedly posed as construction workers to lure Aminu to a secluded location. There, he was attacked with a shovel, sustaining multiple severe blows to the back of the head, according to autopsy results.
“The suspects confessed that the murder was premeditated, aimed at stealing the victim’s tricycle,” Afusat said. Following the killing, the suspects reportedly sold the tricycle to one Kabiru Idris in Ayingba. Idris was later arrested, and a search of his residence yielded the victim’s tricycle along with four other motorcycles suspected to be stolen.
Further investigations revealed that Ibrahim and Samson are ex-convicts with prior records in armed robbery and homicide, while Idris admitted to knowingly purchasing stolen property from criminal gangs.
The Kogi State Police have vowed to continue pursuing other potential accomplices, highlighting ongoing efforts to tackle organized crime and protect citizens in the region.
