Tragedy at Covenant University: Final-Year Student Dies After Collapsing During Football Training

A final-year student of Covenant University, Toluwase Jesutunmise, has died after collapsing during a football training session on campus, in an incident that has sparked concern among students and the wider academic community.

According to an official statement issued on Wednesday by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Timothy Anake, the tragic incidence occurred on Monday, April 6, 2026.

Jesutunmise, a 500-level Building Technology student, had been actively participating in a training session before stepping out to rest, reportedly complaining of leg pain and fatigue. Moments later, his teammates noticed he was gasping for breath and quickly rushed him to the institution’s medical centre, located directly opposite the playing field.

However, he was said to have stopped breathing before arriving at the emergency unit.

Despite the absence of vital signs upon arrival, medical personnel immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation and deployed an automated external defibrillator in an effort to revive him. All attempts proved unsuccessful, and he was subsequently pronounced clinically dead. Preliminary indications, according to the university, suggest a previously undisclosed heart condition may have contributed to the incident.

The development has triggered reactions on social media, with some students alleging that the university’s medical centre lacked adequate emergency support, particularly oxygen supply. One user on X claimed longstanding concerns about the facility’s preparedness.

In response, the Vice-Chancellor refuted claims of negligence, maintaining that the medical team acted promptly and that all necessary emergency equipment was available and properly utilised.

“The university wishes to confirm that there was no form of negligence in the response of medical personnel or any shortage of required equipment,” the statement read.

The management further disclosed that university officials remained at the medical centre throughout the ordeal and supported the student’s family until his burial.

Describing the loss as devastating, the institution extended its condolences to Jesutunmise’s family, noting that his death represents a significant loss to both the university community and society at large.
