Abia Govt Pushes Power Sector Reforms, Eyes Stronger Electricity Supply Through Strategic Partnerships

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has restated his administration’s commitment to improving electricity supply across the state through ongoing reforms and strategic partnerships in the power sector.

He made the remarks on Wednesday at the Government House in Umuahia while receiving the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, Jennifer Adighije, who was on a courtesy visit.

Otti commended the company for restoring operations at the 450MW Alaoji Open Cycle Power Plant after successful rehabilitation work and the resolution of long-standing gas supply challenges. He described electricity as a critical driver of economic growth, noting that production, education, healthcare, and daily life all depend heavily on stable power supply.

The governor specifically praised the revival of the Alaoji plant, which is now generating close to 400 megawatts, saying the development marks a significant milestone for the state’s energy ambitions. He also explained that the output would support efforts to strengthen electricity supply within the emerging Umuahia power market being developed by the state government.

Otti further revealed that the state has signed an agreement with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company to acquire electricity distribution assets covering parts of Abia. He added that the deal is currently at the payment stage and, once concluded alongside the establishment of the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency, will provide a solid framework for improved power distribution. He also noted that the state is investing in renewable energy and mini-grid projects to ensure more stable and diversified electricity supply.

In her remarks, Adighije said three generating units at the Alaoji plant have been restored, making about 375 megawatts available for the national grid. She explained that the plant had been shut down since 2023 due to gas supply issues and metering disputes but was revived after rehabilitation works and settlement of outstanding obligations to gas suppliers. She added that the company is open to partnerships with Abia State under the Electricity Act, noting that the state presents a strong investment opportunity.
