Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has admitted he was disappointed when Declan Rice chose to join Arsenal instead of moving to Old Trafford.
Rice became Arsenal’s most expensive signing after completing a £105 million transfer from West Ham in 2023 and has since established himself as a key player in Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Before making the switch to the Emirates, the England international was heavily linked with both Manchester United and Manchester City, with both clubs reportedly interested in securing his signature.
Speaking on JoelBeya TV, Fernandes revealed that he always believed Rice possessed the qualities needed to succeed at Manchester United.
“Obviously, I knew him already from West Ham and we all knew the qualities he had,” Fernandes said.
“I have always said that I thought Rice was a player to play for Manchester United.”
The Portuguese midfielder added that he was unhappy to see Rice choose Arsenal, insisting the midfielder would have been an ideal fit for the Red Devils.
“I was really sad when he chose to go to Arsenal. I don’t know if there was the opportunity or the chance to come to Manchester United, but I always thought that he would be the perfect fit for our club,” he stated.
Since joining Arsenal, Rice has become one of the club’s standout performers, playing a major role in the team’s domestic and European campaigns under Arteta.
