Nigerian Afrobeats singer Joeboy has spoken about the challenges affecting collaborations in the music industry, saying ego and unhealthy competition often create problems between artists.
Speaking during an interview with Cool FM Lagos, the singer, whose real name is Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus, explained that he prefers working with artists he is comfortable with because such relationships usually come without rivalry or unnecessary tension.
According to Joeboy, collaboration should not be treated as a competition, stressing that he expects featured artists to bring something unique and even outperform him on a song if necessary. He said the purpose of featuring another artist is to add a different style or energy that he may not be able to deliver himself.
The singer noted that he does not interfere with how collaborators record their verses and expects the same level of creative freedom in return. He criticised situations where artists invite others for features but still try to dictate how they should sound or approach the music.
Joeboy also revealed that some artists become competitive after hearing a collaborator’s verse, sometimes going back to change their own contributions because they feel overshadowed. According to him, this mindset defeats the real purpose of collaboration in music.
He maintained that successful collaborations are built on trust, respect and creative balance rather than ego. The Afrobeats star added that artists should focus more on making great music together instead of trying to outshine one another.
