Mercy Johnson Faces Online Backlash Over ₦25,000 Menstrual Care Brand

Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson Okojie has come under criticism on social media following her unveiling as a brand ambassador for Girls Tag, a menstrual care brand whose product is reportedly priced at ₦25,000.

The product is described as an all-in-one period care pack designed for girls aged nine and above. It was launched with Mercy Johnson and her daughter, Purity Okojie, as brand ambassadors, while fellow actress Regina Daniels was later also unveiled as part of the brand’s ambassador lineup.

Shortly after the launch, the announcement triggered heated reactions online, with many users questioning the affordability and timing of such a high-priced menstrual product in a country where many girls struggle to afford basic sanitary items.

Critics argued that the pricing was insensitive to Nigeria’s economic realities, noting that many young girls already miss school or resort to unsafe alternatives during their menstrual cycles due to the cost of sanitary products.

While some social media users defended the brand as a business venture targeting a specific market segment, others insisted that menstrual products should remain affordable and accessible, stressing that they are essential items rather than luxury goods.

The debate continued online, with several commenters urging celebrities and brands to be more socially conscious when endorsing products tied to basic health needs, especially in a country where many families are still struggling with everyday living costs.
