The organisers of The Headies have announced that the 18th edition of Nigeria’s premier music awards ceremony will take place in Toronto, Canada, marking another step in the event’s international expansion.
The announcement was made during “The Big Announcement” event held at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, where Headies founder and HipTV Chief Executive Officer, Ayo Animashaun, unveiled plans for the prestigious awards ceremony.
Despite the decision to host the main event in Canada, Animashaun assured Nigerian fans that they would remain an integral part of the celebration. He disclosed that organisers are planning a live watch party in Lagos alongside selected award presentations and a special joint broadcast linking audiences in Toronto and Nigeria.
According to him, the initiative is designed to ensure that music lovers in both countries can participate in the festivities simultaneously, creating a shared experience that connects the Headies’ local roots with its growing international presence.
Addressing concerns about staging the awards outside Nigeria once again, Animashaun explained that the long-term growth and sustainability of the Headies depend heavily on sponsorship and financial support. He noted that funding considerations play a significant role in determining the location of the event and questioned whether the awards could continue at all without adequate backing.
He further emphasized that strong partnerships and sponsorship deals are essential for maintaining the production quality of the awards and advancing its global ambitions. While the official date for the 18th edition has not yet been announced, organisers said additional details about the event will be released in the coming months.
