The Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, has called for a stronger United States military presence in Borno State, urging American forces to establish a military base in the Mandara Mountains to help eliminate Boko Haram insurgents operating in the region.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, Ndume said the U.S. possesses the technology and capabilities needed to support efforts to clear terrorist strongholds in the Mandara Mountains, Sambisa Forest and other insurgent hideouts across the North-East.
The lawmaker expressed support for increased American involvement in the fight against insurgency, stating that a military base in the Mandara Mountains would provide a strategic position for monitoring and targeting insurgent activities. He appealed directly for U.S. forces to deploy to Gwoza and take over the mountainous area.
According to Ndume, the location would allow security forces to observe movements in Sambisa Forest and other areas where insurgents operate. He argued that advanced surveillance technology could significantly improve efforts to track and disrupt Boko Haram activities.
The senator further explained that the Mandara Mountains sit along critical routes used by insurgents to move across Borno State. He noted that militants often travel between Sambisa Forest, the Lake Chad region, Kaga, Buni Yadi and Gwoza, creating a network that enables them to sustain their operations.
Ndume maintained that cutting off these movement corridors would significantly weaken the insurgents by disrupting access to supplies and support. He stressed, however, that achieving such an objective would require adequate manpower and resources, adding that the Nigerian Army needs stronger operational support and sufficient boots on the ground to effectively tackle the security challenge.
